Updates Regarding COVID-19

As of March 23, 2020  Update sent via Email

Dear Symphony Center Performers,

We hope everyone is staying safe and healthy. In the previous email sent on March 15th, we asked all of you to tell us if performing at Symphony Center on April 8th was something that was still of interest for all musicians. Since then, we have been in dialogue with World Projects about their attempt to postpone the concert to the summer. Unfortunately, today, we received an email stating that the 2020 Chicago International Music Festival at Symphony Center has been officially canceled given the current and prospective situation of COVID-19. We are deeply saddened to hear this news.

Here is a message from MPO Music Director, Taka Matsunaga, regarding the cancellation of this event:

"It’s been two weeks since we stopped the rehearsals, and I’m already very much missing those times that we were making music together at the orchestra room. I now deeply feel that those rehearsals are such a precious moment that we can connect each other with the harmony. And now, I know we are desperate to re-connect with the music again while forced to stay home..

I’m so very sorry to everyone who has been looking forward to playing at Symphony Center. Instead, we have been offered to join their next year’s festival which will be held on April 13, 2021 with no additional costs for our end. For the seniors, you guys can still come join us if your college schedule allows you to do so with a minimal rehearsals. You guys definitely deserve to have this opportunity.

MPO has missed the opportunities to play at Symphony Center for 2 years in a row. Who would have known there would be a strike followed by a global pandemic. But remember, as long as there is music, we can connect. For now, all we can do is to believe in the power of music.

We will definitely let you know once we know when we can resume the rehearsals. Stay healthy!"

As of March 13, 2020  Update sent via Email

Dear MPO/MSO members and family,

As many of you have heard, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association has recently canceled all events at the Symphony Center for the next 30 days in an effort to limit community transmission of COVID-19. Although this information from CSOA has been released, we still have not received notice from World Projects about any confirmed cancellation of the Music Festival. We will keep you updated on any news we receive.

More importantly, we regret to inform you that MPO will be cancelling all Sunday rehearsals for the rest of the month, beginning this Sunday, March 15. Rehearsals are scheduled to resume on April 5, unless otherwise stated later in the month. The Chamber Program will be postponed to April, but the deadline for registration will still be this Saturday, March 15. Lastly, our fundraiser at California Pizza Kitchen this Sunday has been suspended as well.

In terms of the MPO Spring Concert in May, the Midwest Fine Arts Society has not yet made any decisions for a possible cancellation of the event. We will keep you updated about any changes.

Thank you so much for your cooperation through these difficult times, and please remember to always practice proper hygiene in order to keep our community safe and healthy.
