Kumiko Nowlan is a distinguished clarinetist based in the Chicagoland area, known for her extensive background and contributions to both performance and education. She earned her B.A. in clarinet performance from Senzoku Music College in Japan, where she was recognized with several awards. Her early career in Tokyo allowed her to work with eminent maestros such as Seiji Ozawa, Mstislav Rostropovich, and Yutaka Sado, who profoundly influenced her decision to pursue advanced studies in the United States.

Upon relocating to Chicago, Kumiko continued her studies under the guidance of notable clarinetists, including Gregory Smith, a former teacher at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, who played a significant role in encouraging her to complete her Master's degree at the Chicago College of Performing Arts. She also studied chamber music with Dale Clevenger and Ludmila Lazar, further enriching her musical expertise.

Kumiko's performance experience includes serving as a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago from 2000 to 2002, where she benefited from private lessons with Larry Combs and participated in sectional rehearsals. She has performed at various prestigious events, including the International Clarinet Festival in Oklahoma and Ohio, and has been involved with numerous local music groups such as the Chicago Clarinet Ensemble, Chicago Summer Opera, Chicago Pop Orchestra, and Harper Symphony Orchestra.

In addition to her performance career, Kumiko has made significant contributions as an educator. She coaches the winds section of the Midwest Philharmonic Orchestra, serves as a faculty member at the Midwest Conservatory of Music, and teaches at her own studio, where all of her students have successfully achieved ILMEA status and garnered numerous accolades for their performance.
